The Cedar of Lebanon *Cedrus libani* is a spectacular tree with roots in ancient history. This conifer grows slowly but can eventually become a stunning specimen, reaching 35 metres or more when given enough room. Its branches grow horizontally, forming the classic flat-topped tiers that make mature specimens so recognisable. The short, dark green needles cluster thickly along the branches, giving the tree lovely texture all year round.
Young cedars start with a pyramid shape, but over time they develop that famous flat crown that’s made them popular in large gardens and parklands. Come autumn, you’ll spot big upright cones on the upper branches. These need two years to ripen before breaking apart on the tree to scatter their seeds.
This isn’t just a beautiful tree – it’s tough too. Once settled in, it handles dry spells well and stands up to strong winds. Wildlife loves it, with birds and small mammals using it for shelter. The wood is prized for being long-lasting and sweet-smelling, though nowadays these trees are mainly grown for their looks rather than timber.
Plant your Cedar of Lebanon in full sun with soil that drains well. It’s happy in different soil types but won’t cope with waterlogged ground. After it’s established, it handles drought quite well. You won’t usually need to prune unless you’re removing dead or damaged bits. A balanced, slow-release feed in spring will help it grow healthily. Watch for needle blight, though these trees are generally quite tough.
