This variety of Lawson Cypress *Chamaecyparis lawsoniana* stands out for its beautiful silver-grey foliage, making it a wonderful option for gardeners wanting to bring lasting colour and interesting texture to their garden.
‘Chilworth Silver’ has a steady growth rate, usually putting on around 20-30cm each year. It will eventually reach 4-6 metres tall, developing a broad conical to pyramid-like shape that brings height and structure to the garden. This graceful form works well in medium to large gardens, either as a feature plant or as part of mixed plantings and woodland areas.
The real star of this tree is its foliage. The small, scale-like leaves show off a lovely silver-grey shade that stays attractive all year round. This cool, silvery tone makes a brilliant contrast with other garden plants and brings a classy, almost magical quality to any space. During winter, the foliage takes on hints of blue, keeping the garden interesting through the colder season.
‘Chilworth Silver’ is tougher than it looks. It suits our climate well and will grow happily in full sun or partial shade, though the colour develops best in full sun. It likes well-drained, slightly acidic soil but will adapt to different soil conditions. It also copes reasonably well with urban environments, making it suitable for various garden situations.
This conifer is popular with gardeners for its unusual colour and graceful shape. Use it as an eye-catching feature plant where the silver-grey leaves will draw attention. Alternatively, group several together to form a gentle, cool-coloured backdrop for other plants. It works brilliantly in both contemporary and traditional garden styles, bringing year-round elegance and class.
Lawson Cypress ‘Chilworth Silver’ is relatively easy to care for, which is good news for UK gardeners. It prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained, slightly acidic soil, but it’s adaptable to various soil types. When you first plant it, water regularly for the first growing season to help it establish. After that, it appreciates consistent moisture but can tolerate short periods of drought. Feed it with a slow-release, balanced fertiliser in spring if desired, but it generally doesn’t require much feeding. Pruning isn’t usually necessary unless you want to maintain a specific shape or size. If you need to prune, do it in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.
