Lawson Cypress ‘Pygmaea Argentea’ – Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Pygmaea Argentea’ is a delightful compact conifer that adds silvery charm to gardens. This small evergreen works brilliantly in tight spaces, rockeries, or as an eye-catching feature in mixed plantings. ‘Pygmaea Argentea’ develops into a tidy, rounded shrub that usually grows to just 0.5 to 1 metre tall and wide after 10 years, making it perfect for any garden size.

The leaves of ‘Pygmaea Argentea’ are what make it special. The tiny, overlapping foliage grows in flat clusters, giving it a soft, feathery look. The leaves show off a lovely silvery-white shade that’s especially bright on fresh growth. This silver tone looks fantastic against the deeper green colour of the older foliage, creating lovely contrast and visual appeal.

This Lawson Cypress variety suits our climate well. It’s tough enough for cold winters, though it benefits from protection against strong winds. ‘Pygmaea Argentea’ does best in full sun, which keeps its compact form and bright colouring at their peak, but it’ll also grow happily in light shade.

This plant will suit gardeners who want something easy to look after. Its gentle growth rate means it keeps its neat shape without much trimming. This makes it brilliant for time-poor gardeners or anyone wanting fuss-free plants. Its compact size also makes it great for pots, ideal for patios or small outdoor spaces.

Lawson Cypress ‘Pygmaea Argentea’ brings colour to the garden all year long. Its silver leaves create a lovely bright spot amongst other plants and look especially good in winter when deciduous plants are bare. Whether you want some evergreen colour, an easy-care centrepiece, or a bit of winter sparkle in your garden, ‘Pygmaea Argentea’ is a flexible and lovely option.

Lawson Cypress ‘Pygmaea Argentea’ is easy to care for in UK gardens. Plant in well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. Water regularly when young, but once established, it’s fairly drought-tolerant. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Pruning isn’t essential, but you can lightly shape it in late winter if desired.
