Japanese Red Cedar ‘Elegans’ *Cryptomeria japonica* ‘Elegans’ is a lovely conifer that adds grace to any garden. This slowly-growing evergreen stands out for its soft, feathery foliage that shifts colour with the seasons. During spring and summer months, the needles show a pleasant blue-green shade, which transforms to an eye-catching bronze-purple through autumn and winter. This seasonal colour shift provides interest all year round.

The ‘Elegans’ form is smaller than the main species, which suits more modest gardens well. It grows in a natural cone shape that needs very little pruning to keep tidy, ideal for time-pressed gardeners. With age, it takes on a slightly uneven form, which gives your garden more character.

This tree works well as a feature plant in gardens or within mixed planting schemes. Its gentle texture makes a nice contrast with other plants, whilst its shifting colours can become the star of your winter garden. Japanese Red Cedar ‘Elegans’ also suits wildlife gardens, offering cover for birds and smaller creatures.

Though it comes from Japan originally, this tree settles well into British growing conditions. It copes with most soil types and grows happily in full sun or partial shade. Its toughness and good looks make it popular with gardeners wanting to bring some exotic appeal to their plots.

*Cryptomeria japonica* as a whole originates from Japan and is an evergreen conifer. The ‘Elegans’ cultivar is just one of many cultivars of this species available.

‘Elegans’ is relatively easy to care for, making it suitable for gardeners of all levels. Plant it in a spot that gets full sun to partial shade. It prefers moist, well-drained soil but can tolerate a range of soil types. Water regularly during its first growing season to help establish a strong root system. Once established, it’s quite drought-tolerant. Fertilise in spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser to promote healthy growth. Pruning isn’t usually necessary, but you can lightly trim in late winter or early spring to maintain shape if desired. Protect young plants from strong winds, especially in colder areas.
