Cupressus arizonica, commonly known as Arizona Cypress, is a striking evergreen conifer native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Growing these trees from seeds offers an economical way to introduce this attractive species to your landscape. The seeds are small, about 3-5 mm in diameter, and are found within the tree’s woody cones. When mature, these cones open to release the seeds, which are brown to grey in colour and slightly flattened. Each cone can contain numerous seeds, making them an efficient means of propagation.
Arizona Cypress trees grown from these seeds can reach heights of 10-25 metres at maturity, forming a pyramidal to columnar shape. They are known for their attractive blue-green to silvery-grey foliage, which provides year-round interest and a lovely contrast in mixed plantings. The bark is reddish-brown and peels in thin strips, adding to the tree’s ornamental value. These trees are highly adaptable and drought-tolerant once established, making them suitable for drought and low-water gardens.
Growing Arizona Cypress from seeds requires patience, as the trees are slow-growing in their early years. However, this process allows gardeners to nurture the trees from the very beginning, potentially creating a stronger attachment to the mature specimens. It’s also a cost-effective way to grow multiple trees for use as a windbreak, privacy screen, or as individual specimen trees.
Also known as Hesperocyparis arizonica.
Natural Germination: Arizona Cypress seeds typically require a cold period to break dormancy. In nature, seeds fall in autumn and go through winterโs cold, germinating in spring. Plant the seeds in autumn to align with this natural cycle.
Artificial Stratification: If planting at other times, soak for 24 hours, then simulate this cold period by refrigerating the seeds for 30 days before sowing in a moist medium. Seeds should germinate at room temperature.
