Himalayan Cypress – Cupressus torulosa seeds offer the rewarding opportunity to cultivate a majestic conifer from the towering Himalayan regions. This elegant evergreen is prized for its pyramidal shape and handsome green to blue-green foliage, with whip-like sprays that release a delicate new-mown grass scent when crushed. The species is also valued for its resistance to cypress canker and its versatility, working equally well as a specimen tree or as hedging.
Growing your own from seed means you can follow every stage of this near-threatened species, from germination through to a graceful mature tree. The cones transition beautifully from green to purplish-black before ripening to a warm red-brown, adding year-round interest to gardens.
Natural Germination: Sow Himalayan Cypress seeds outdoors in autumn or early spring, allowing natural winter chilling to break dormancy. Sow seeds approximately 2mm (1/16 inch) deep in free-draining soil or seed compost, tamp gently, and mulch the seed bed to maintain consistent moisture. Position in a location with good light but protection from harsh conditions. Keep the seed bed evenly moist but not waterlogged throughout the germination period.
Artificial Stratification: For indoor propagation, soak seeds in water for 24 hours before stratification. Cold stratify the soaked seeds for 30 days at 1-5°C in moist sand or vermiculite sealed in a plastic bag. After stratification, sow seeds 2mm (1/16 inch) deep in well-draining seed compost, tamp the soil surface, and keep consistently moist. Maintain temperatures of 15-20°C for germination. Seeds can be treated with Captan fungicide (4 tablespoons per gallon of water) during stratification to prevent fungal problems.
