The English Holly *Ilex aquifolium* is a true British native, and these compact plants measuring 15-30cm are ideal for creating your own holly hedge or bringing some year-round green structure to your garden. At this manageable size, they’ll settle in well and get their roots established without fuss. English Holly is well-known for its prickly, shiny dark green foliage that’s instantly recognisable from Christmas displays. As these small specimens mature, they’ll form that thick, compact growth that makes holly excellent for screening and deterring unwanted visitors.
Though they’re small now, these hollies will grow into sizeable shrubs or modest trees, possibly reaching 15 metres if left unchecked – but they respond well to pruning if you want to keep them contained. In late spring, you’ll notice tiny white blooms which, given you have both male and female specimens nearby, will develop into those familiar bright red berries come autumn. These berries provide vital food for garden birds during the harsh winter months when pickings are slim.
Holly’s remarkably hardy, tolerating various soil conditions and situations. As a native species, it thrives in our weather and provides excellent support for local wildlife. Birds find shelter and nesting spots in its dense branches, whilst it serves as a host plant for the holly blue butterfly.
Plant your holly in sun or partial shade in well-drained soil. It’s not fussy about soil type but prefers it a bit on the acidic side. Water regularly until it’s settled in, especially during dry spells. A yearly feed with a general-purpose fertiliser in spring will keep it ticking over nicely. Prune in winter or early spring to keep it in shape. Remember, only female plants produce berries, and they need a male nearby for pollination.
