The English Holly *Ilex aquifolium*, reaching 80/100cm in its 2-litre pot, is a lovely specimen that’s ready to settle into your garden nicely. This particular size gives your holly a brilliant head start, perfect for creating an impressive hedge or bringing some evergreen colour to your flower beds. English Holly remains a treasured British native, well-known for its prickly, shiny dark green foliage that’s become synonymous with festive decorations. As this young plant matures, it’ll develop that thick, compact growth pattern that makes holly excellent for screening and creating natural boundaries.
Though still establishing itself at this stage, this holly has the potential to become a sizeable shrub or modest tree, possibly growing up to 15 metres if left unpruned – but it responds well to regular trimming to maintain your preferred size. During late spring, you’ll notice delicate white blooms appearing, which will develop into those famous scarlet berries come autumn, provided you have both male and female specimens in your garden. These vibrant berries provide vital nourishment for garden birds throughout the colder months when other food sources become scarce.
Holly proves itself as a resilient performer, tolerating various soil conditions and weather patterns. As a native species, it thrives in our local climate whilst offering excellent support for indigenous wildlife. Birds frequently choose its dense branches for nesting sites, and it serves as a host plant for holly blue butterflies.
Plant your holly in sun or partial shade in well-drained soil. It’s not fussy about soil type but prefers it a bit on the acidic side. Water regularly until it’s settled in, especially during dry spells. A yearly feed with a general-purpose fertiliser in spring will keep it ticking over nicely. Prune in winter or early spring to keep it in shape. Remember, only female plants produce berries, and they need a male nearby for pollination.
