Incense Cedar ‘Aureovariegata’ – Calocedrus decurrens is a striking evergreen conifer that brings year-round colour and architectural interest to gardens. This variegated form features bright golden-yellow splashes and streaks scattered throughout its rich green foliage, creating a luminous effect that catches the light beautifully in all seasons. The plant develops a naturally columnar habit with dense, flattened sprays of aromatic foliage that release a pleasant fragrance when brushed or crushed. This specimen is currently 40/60cm tall and supplied in a 5-litre pot, providing an excellent foundation for establishing a mature feature tree.

The golden variegation is most pronounced on new growth during spring and early summer, when fresh shoots emerge in brilliant yellow tones before settling into their established pattern. Unlike many variegated conifers that can appear patchy, ‘Aureovariegata’ displays its colouration in an attractive, well-distributed manner across the entire plant. The foliage maintains good colour intensity throughout winter, providing valuable interest during the dormant season when many other plants fade into the background. The bark develops attractive reddish-brown tones with age, adding textural contrast to the ornamental foliage.

This cultivar works exceptionally well as a specimen tree where its distinctive colouring can be fully appreciated, or as part of mixed conifer plantings where it provides a bright focal point amongst darker green neighbours. The columnar form makes it particularly suitable for gardens where space is limited, as it grows upwards rather than spreading widely. It also performs well in large containers for several years, allowing gardeners with patios or courtyards to enjoy its architectural qualities before eventual planting out.

Calocedrus decurrens ‘Aureovariegata’ tolerates a range of soil conditions but establishes most successfully in well-drained ground. It shows good resistance to common conifer diseases and maintains its neat habit without requiring regular pruning. The aromatic foliage has natural pest-deterrent properties, and the dense growth provides excellent nesting opportunities for garden birds. Deer tend to avoid browsing on incense cedars, making this a sensible choice for rural gardens where deer pressure can limit planting options.

Care Guide

Plant in a position receiving full sun to partial shade, though the golden variegation develops most intensely in good light levels. Ensure the planting site has well-drained soil, as waterlogged conditions can lead to root problems. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and incorporate organic matter to improve soil structure. Water thoroughly after planting and maintain consistent moisture during the first growing season to encourage strong root establishment.

Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth. A mulch layer of bark chips or well-rotted compost around the base helps retain soil moisture and suppress competing weeds, but keep mulch clear of the trunk itself. Water during prolonged dry spells, particularly in the first three years after planting. Once established, incense cedars show good drought tolerance.

Pruning is rarely necessary as the plant maintains its natural columnar shape. Remove any dead, damaged, or diseased branches in late winter or early spring. If any all-green reversions appear, prune these out promptly to prevent them from dominating the variegated growth. Protect young plants from strong winds until well established, using a stake if necessary for the first two years.
