Incense Cedar ‘Maupin Glow’ – Calocedrus decurrens is a striking evergreen conifer that brings a fresh burst of golden colour to gardens throughout the year. This exceptional cultivar stands out with its bright golden-yellow foliage that emerges in spring and maintains its luminous appearance through summer, gradually softening to chartreuse tones as the seasons progress. The flattened, scale-like foliage forms elegant sprays that create a dense, columnar silhouette, making this an architectural addition to borders, specimen plantings, or as part of a mixed evergreen collection.
The vertical growth habit of ‘Maupin Glow’ makes it particularly valuable where space is at a premium. Its naturally narrow form requires minimal pruning to maintain its shape, and the rich cinnamon-brown bark becomes increasingly attractive as the tree matures, providing textural interest even in winter months. The aromatic foliage releases a pleasant, spicy fragrance when brushed against, adding a sensory dimension to the garden experience.
This cultivar thrives in full sun positions where the golden colouration develops most intensely, though it will tolerate partial shade with slightly less vibrant tones. Plant in well-drained soil with good moisture retention during establishment. Once established, Calocedrus decurrens ‘Maupin Glow’ demonstrates excellent drought tolerance, making it a resilient choice for gardens facing increasingly dry summers. It performs well across most soil types, including chalk and clay, provided drainage is adequate.
Care Guide
Water regularly during the first two growing seasons to establish a deep root system. Once established, supplementary watering is only necessary during prolonged dry periods. Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring to encourage healthy growth and maintain the vibrant foliage colour.
Pruning is rarely necessary beyond removing any damaged or dead branches in late spring. If shaping is desired, trim lightly in mid-spring before new growth emerges. Avoid heavy pruning as this can spoil the natural form.
Mulch around the base with organic matter in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping the mulch clear of the trunk to prevent rot. This conifer is generally pest and disease-free, though ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues in particularly wet seasons.
Protection from cold, drying winds is beneficial in exposed locations, particularly while the plant is young. In colder regions, a temporary windbreak may help during the first winter after planting. The plant is fully hardy once established and requires no winter protection in most areas.
