Natural Germination: For natural germination, Acer palmatum seeds benefit from planting directly after collection in the warmth, then cold stratification during winter. Sowing the seeds in summer allows them to undergo this process naturally, preparing them for germination in spring.

Artificial Stratification: In the absence of natural stratification, soak in water for 24 hours, simulate summer conditions by mixing the seeds with moist sand and placing them in a sealed bag into some heat for at least 90 – 120 days, then follow with 120 days in the refrigerator for about 90-120 days. This method prepares the seeds for planting and successful germination in spring, mirroring the natural warming and chilling they would experience outdoors.
