The Japanese White Pine ‘Ooh la la’ is a captivating dwarf cultivar of the Pinus parviflora species, prized for its compact, symmetrical growth habit and delightful ornamental features. This diminutive pine tree, with its current height of 20-40cm, is a true delight for gardeners seeking a low-maintenance, eye-catching addition to their outdoor spaces.
One of the standout characteristics of the ‘Ooh la la’ is its vibrant, silvery-blue foliage. The soft, delicate needles create a stunning contrast against the tree’s reddish-brown bark, which develops a unique, textured appearance as the plant matures. This exceptional colour palette adds a touch of elegance and visual interest to any garden setting.
Despite its compact size, the ‘Ooh la la’ is a resilient and adaptable plant, thriving in a wide range of soil conditions and microclimates. It is particularly well-suited for UK gardens, where it can withstand the occasional harsh winter weather without compromising its overall health and appearance.
Maintenance of the ‘Ooh la la’ is relatively straightforward, requiring only occasional pruning to maintain its desired shape and size. Regular watering during the growing season and the occasional application of a balanced, slow-release fertiliser will ensure the plant continues to flourish and provide years of enjoyment.
Care Guide for UK Gardeners:
To ensure the optimal growth and health of your Japanese White Pine ‘Ooh la la’, follow these simple care guidelines:
Planting: Choose a well-drained, sunny to partially shaded location in your garden. Amend the soil with compost or a balanced, slow-release fertiliser to provide the necessary nutrients.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the first year after planting. Avoid allowing the soil to become waterlogged or completely dry.
Pruning: Prune the tree in late winter or early spring to maintain its compact, symmetrical shape. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches using clean, sharp pruning shears.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to provide the necessary nutrients for healthy growth and development.
Winter Protection: In areas with harsh winters, consider providing a layer of mulch around the base of the tree to insulate the roots and protect against frost damage.
