Juniper ‘Compressa’ Juniperus communis is a compact, slow-growing evergreen shrub native to the UK. This dwarf cultivar of the common juniper forms a dense, mounded shape, typically reaching a height of 0.5-1.2 metres over 10-20 years.
The needle-like, green foliage of Juniper ‘Compressa’ provides year-round interest and colour in the garden. The dense, compact growth habit makes it an excellent choice for small spaces, rock gardens, or as a low-growing hedge. It also works well in containers or as a specimen plant.
This resilient juniper thrives in a wide range of well-drained soil types, from acidic to alkaline, and can tolerate exposed, coastal locations. It prefers full sun but will also grow in partial shade. Regular pruning can help maintain its tidy, mounded form.
Juniper ‘Compressa’ is a versatile and low-maintenance addition to any UK garden. Its compact size, evergreen foliage, and tolerance for challenging conditions make it a reliable and attractive choice for gardeners.
Care Guide for UK Gardeners:
Juniper ‘Compressa’ is a hardy, drought-tolerant plant that requires minimal maintenance. Plant it in well-drained soil in a sunny location, avoiding areas with heavy, wet clay. Water new plants regularly until they become established, then water only during extended dry spells.
Prune the shrub in late winter or early spring to maintain its compact, mounded shape. Remove any dead or damaged branches, and lightly trim the tips of the branches to encourage dense growth. Avoid pruning during the summer months, as this can stress the plant.
Fertilise Juniper ‘Compressa’ in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser. This will help support healthy growth and maintain the vibrant blue-green colour of the foliage.
