Common Juniper Juniperus communis is a tough and adaptable evergreen shrub that works brilliantly in British gardens. This native species has grown wild across our countryside for millennia, so it’s a solid pick for anyone wanting to help local wildlife. The plant forms a low, spreading shape with thick, spiky foliage in shades from dark green through to blue-green. It’s spot on for rock gardens, banks, or anywhere you need reliable ground cover that won’t give you grief. Small, berry-like cones appear on the shrub, starting off green before turning dark purple-black when ripe. These ‘berries’ provide crucial food for our garden birds and other creatures. The leaves give off a lovely gin-scented aroma when you brush against them or crush them between your fingers. This robust plant copes with all sorts of soils and tricky conditions, so it’s brilliant for those awkward garden corners. It shrugs off strong winds and freezing weather, which makes it particularly good for exposed spots or seaside gardens. For centuries, people have used Common Juniper in folk remedies and the kitchen, which adds to its charm as a useful garden plant.
Common Juniper is a low-maintenance plant that’s easy to care for, making it suitable for gardeners of all levels. It prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade. This shrub thrives in well-drained soil and is particularly fond of chalky or sandy conditions. Once established, Common Juniper is drought-tolerant and doesn’t require regular watering except during prolonged dry spells. It’s generally pest and disease-resistant, adding to its low-maintenance appeal. Pruning isn’t usually necessary, but you can trim lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain shape if desired. Be cautious when handling, as the needles can be quite sharp. Common Juniper is slow-growing, so patience is key when adding this plant to your garden.
