Common Juniper ‘Green Carpet’ Juniperus communis is a brilliant low-growing variety that creates a lovely carpet effect in gardens. This compact conifer stays beautifully low, reaching just 20-30cm tall whilst spreading out to around 2 metres wide, making it perfect for ground cover.
The bright green needles are the real star of this plant. They form a dense, textured mat that keeps its fresh colour all year round. This reliable, evergreen appearance makes it brilliant for adding year-round interest to gardens, especially in tricky spots where other plants might not cope.
‘Green Carpet’ works wonderfully as ground cover in lots of different garden situations. It’s fab in rock gardens, where its spreading growth softens hard edges and stone features. On banks and slopes, it helps prevent soil erosion whilst creating an attractive, easy-care surface. In bigger gardens, you can use it as living mulch under trees or to fill gaps between larger shrubs.
This juniper is remarkably tough and adaptable. Like most junipers, it copes brilliantly with poor soil, dry conditions, and exposed spots, making it ideal for difficult garden areas. Once settled in, it needs very little water, so it’s a great choice for eco-friendly, water-wise gardens.
Whilst ‘Green Carpet’ doesn’t have showy flowers, it can produce small blue-black berries that birds love. The thick growth also offers good shelter for small wildlife, helping to boost your garden’s wildlife value.
Maintenance-wise, ‘Green Carpet’ is fantastic for gardeners who want something reliable. It needs very little care once established, rarely requires pruning, and generally shrugs off pests and diseases. This makes it perfect for busy gardeners or low-maintenance garden areas.
Plant ‘Green Carpet’ in full sun to light shade in well-drained soil. It’s adaptable to poor soils and tolerates drought once established. Water regularly when young, especially during dry spells. Minimal pruning required; trim lightly in late spring if needed to maintain shape. Highly resistant to pests and diseases, making it low-maintenance.
