The Juniper ‘Blue Arrow’ Juniperus scopulorum is a superb option for gardeners wanting to bring some style to their outdoor areas. This impressive variety catches the eye with its slender, upright form and stunning blue-green leaves. It works brilliantly in compact gardens or wherever you need a bold vertical feature.

‘Blue Arrow’ has a steady growth rate, eventually reaching around 4-5 metres in height whilst remaining narrow at just 60-90 cm across. This compact nature makes it perfect for cramped spaces or building a natural screen without hogging precious ground room. The thick, erect branches carry delicate, scale-like foliage that provides wonderful texture and colour throughout the seasons.

This juniper is incredibly hardy. It handles our British weather well, even thriving in seaside locations where other plants often fail. It also does well in city environments, tolerating pollution and poor growing conditions. This toughness means you can set it and forget it without endless maintenance.

‘Blue Arrow’ wins fans for its adaptability. Use it as a solo specimen plant, maybe in a large container on decking. Alternatively, line several up to form an attractive formal boundary or shelter belt. They suit contemporary garden styles perfectly, bringing structure and that distinctive blue-green shade. They also complement traditional gardens beautifully, where their neat outline provides contrast against looser, flowing plantings.

Bird lovers will appreciate that junipers support garden wildlife. The thick foliage provides protection and nesting spots, whilst the tiny blue berries that develop on female specimens feed various bird species.

‘Blue Arrow’ is quite recent, bred during the 1980s in America. It was selected for its notably vertical habit and appealing colouration. It’s since won over gardeners worldwide, including here in Britain.

For anyone wanting a fuss-free, striking evergreen that stays manageable, Juniper ‘Blue Arrow’ fits the bill perfectly. It delivers constant appeal, form, and something special to any garden. Whether designing from scratch or refreshing existing borders, this juniper might be exactly what you’re after.

Juniper ‘Blue Arrow’ is a doddle to care for, which is great news for busy gardeners. It thrives in full sun but can handle partial shade too. The main thing is well-drained soil – it doesn’t like wet feet. When you first plant it, water regularly for the first growing season to help it settle in. After that, it’s quite drought-tolerant. You don’t need to feed it much – a light application of slow-release fertiliser in spring is plenty. Pruning isn’t usually necessary, but if you want to tidy it up, do it in late winter or early spring. Keep an eye out for any brown patches, which could be a sign of juniper blight. Overall, with minimal care, your ‘Blue Arrow’ will stay healthy and looking good for years.
