The Juniper ‘Skyrocket’ Juniperus scopulorum is a fantastic pick for gardeners wanting to bring some drama to their outdoor areas. This striking variety truly earns its name with its towering, narrow form that appears to rocket skyward. It’s an excellent choice for compact gardens or anywhere you need a bold vertical feature that won’t gobble up precious ground space.
‘Skyrocket’ develops at a steady rate, eventually reaching 4-6 metres tall whilst remaining slender at just 60-90 cm across. This tight, upright habit makes it ideal for narrow spaces or forming a natural screen that won’t sprawl and dominate your plot. The compact, vertical branches are covered in delicate, scale-like foliage that provides attractive blue-green tones throughout the year.
This juniper is incredibly resilient. It copes brilliantly with our climate, even flourishing in seaside locations where salt-laden air defeats many other species. It also performs well in city environments, tolerating pollution and challenging soil conditions without complaint. This robust nature means minimal fuss once planted.
Gardeners appreciate ‘Skyrocket’ for its adaptability. It works beautifully as a solo specimen, maybe in a substantial container on decking. Alternatively, plant several together for an elegant formal boundary or shelter belt. They suit contemporary garden styles perfectly, providing structure and striking blue-green interest. They’re just as fitting in classic settings, where their neat outline complements softer, rounded plantings.
Bird lovers will be pleased that junipers support garden wildlife. The thick foliage provides protection and nesting opportunities, whilst the tiny blue berries produced by female plants feed various bird species.
‘Skyrocket’ has been favoured by gardeners since its introduction during the 1960s. It was chosen for its exceptionally upright habit and appealing colour, and has been enhancing gardens ever since.
For those seeking a fuss-free, striking evergreen that stays manageable, Juniper ‘Skyrocket’ is an outstanding option. It delivers constant appeal, framework, and something special to any garden. Whether creating a fresh design or refreshing an established space, this juniper might be exactly what you need.
Juniper ‘Skyrocket’ is a doddle to care for, which is great news for busy gardeners. It thrives in full sun but can handle partial shade too. The main thing is well-drained soil – it doesn’t like wet feet. When you first plant it, water regularly for the first growing season to help it settle in. After that, it’s quite drought-tolerant. You don’t need to feed it much – a light application of slow-release fertiliser in spring is plenty. Pruning isn’t usually necessary, but if you want to tidy it up, do it in late winter or early spring.
