Blue Carpet Juniper Juniperus squamata ‘Blue Carpet’ is an attractive evergreen shrub that brings silvery-blue tones to gardens. This prostrate form of the Flaky Juniper is loved for its distinctive foliage colour and mat-forming growth, producing a thick ground-hugging carpet that typically grows 30-40 cm tall and spreads to 2 metres across.
The small needle-like foliage grows in dense clusters along supple stems, creating a soft, feathery texture that works well alongside other garden plants. ‘Blue Carpet’ proves incredibly useful in gardens, working brilliantly as ground cover on banks, in rockeries, or positioned at the front of mixed plantings. Its tough constitution and ability to cope with dry conditions make it perfect for difficult spots where many plants would fail, including thin or stony ground. This juniper is also valuable for preventing soil erosion on steep areas.
The consistent silvery-blue colouring provides a calming backdrop to planting schemes, maintaining interest throughout winter when many plants have died back. With age, ‘Blue Carpet’ forms gentle waves and curves that follow natural ground levels, making it perfect for informal garden styles. Used to blanket larger spaces, soften path edges, or tumble down retaining walls, Blue Carpet Juniper Juniperus squamata ‘Blue Carpet’ gives gardeners a fuss-free, attractive option for many different uses.
Cultural Requirements
Junipers, in general, are quite hardy and can tolerate a range of soil conditions, though they prefer well-drained soils. ‘Blue Carpet’ would likely thrive best in full sun to bring out its blue hue, but it’s also adaptable to partial shade. Regular watering during its initial years will benefit its growth, but mature plants are relatively drought-tolerant.
Maintenance
Junipers are relatively low maintenance. They may need occasional pruning if a specific shape or size is desired, but ‘Blue Carpet’, with its natural upright form, often requires minimal intervention.
