Mint Julep Juniper Juniperus × pfitzeriana ‘Monlep’ is a popular cultivar that adds fresh colour to gardens. This evergreen shrub reaches 0.9-1.2 metres tall and spreads 1.8-2.4 metres wide, creating a low, mounded form with elegant arching branches.
The plant’s standout feature is its soft, scale-like foliage in bright mint-green that stays vibrant all year round. This lively colour livens up garden spaces and works beautifully alongside darker green or purple plants.
‘Monlep’ offers plenty of uses in garden planning. Its spreading nature makes it perfect for ground cover, particularly on slopes where it helps prevent soil erosion. It looks great spilling over walls or trimmed as a low hedge. In rockeries, its flowing shape softens harsh lines and brings movement to the space.
This cultivar is prized for being adaptable and easy to care for. It copes with different soil types and becomes drought-tolerant when settled, making it suitable for water-saving gardens. Unlike many junipers, it handles light shade well, so you can plant it in spots where others might not thrive.
Though not grown for blooms, ‘Monlep’ sometimes produces small blue-grey berries that birds enjoy, bringing wildlife interest to your garden. Its thick growth offers good shelter for smaller creatures too.
A major benefit of ‘Monlep’ is its natural resistance to juniper blight and spider mites, which often trouble other junipers. This toughness makes it a dependable option for gardeners wanting a fuss-free plant.
