The Gaoshan Pine is a rare and striking conifer that will make a fine addition to your garden. Also known as the Sikang Pine, Pinus densata comes from the high mountains of Tibet and western China. It grows at altitudes up to 4,600 metres, making it one of the toughest pines around.

This tree is a natural hybrid. It formed from crosses between Pinus tabuliformis and Pinus yunnanensis many thousands of years ago. Over time, it became a stable species in its own right. This makes it quite special from a botanical point of view.

If you want something different, this pine delivers. It has a lovely shape that changes as it matures. Young trees tend to be quite narrow and upright. As they age, they develop a more open, spreading crown. The bark is dark grey and deeply furrowed, adding texture and interest all year round.

The needles are medium green and come in pairs. They give the tree a soft, feathery look. In spring, you may spot small cones forming. These mature over two years and add to the tree’s charm.

This pine handles cold weather with ease. It comes from harsh mountain climates, so British winters pose no problem. It also copes well with wind. This makes it a good choice for exposed sites where other trees might struggle.

Natural Germination: Gaoshan Pine seeds need a period of cold to break dormancy. Sow them outdoors in late autumn or early winter. This allows them to experience natural cold stratification through the winter months. Germination should occur the following spring.

Artificial Stratification: To stratify the seeds artificially, mix them with damp sand or vermiculite in a sealed plastic bag. Place this in the fridge at around 3-5°C for 60 to 90 days. Check occasionally to ensure the medium stays moist but not wet. After this cold period, the seeds are ready to sow.
