The Slash Pine Pinus elliottii is a bold evergreen that adds southern American charm to British gardens. This pine has a decent growth rate, putting on roughly 30-60cm each year. While it can tower up to 30 metres in its homeland, here it typically reaches a more manageable 15-20 metres. That makes it ideal for spacious gardens or as a feature tree in larger settings.

What really catches the eye are those impressive dark green needles, stretching 20-30cm long. They grow in small groups of two or three, giving the tree a lovely feathery look that’s both bold and elegant. The bark’s worth noting too – it starts off reddish-brown then develops into thick, scaly plates as it matures, providing good winter texture.

Don’t let its exotic origins fool you – this pine is hardier than you might think. While not quite as tough as native pines, it handles British winters well in milder spots, particularly down south. It’s brilliant near the coast too, shrugging off salt spray that would trouble many other trees.
