The Negishi Japanese White Pine is a lovely compact conifer that adds Japanese garden charm to any outdoor area. This dwarf pine grows slowly, forming a neat dome shape that tends to spread outwards more than upwards. Its soft blue-green needles appear in tidy clusters of five, giving the tree a pleasantly textured look. New growth appears each spring as pale green candles, creating an attractive colour contrast against the older foliage. With age, this pine develops a naturally uneven form that suits both traditional and contemporary gardens perfectly. It works brilliantly in smaller plots, rockeries, or large pots. Originally discovered in Japan, the Negishi has been valued by Japanese gardeners for many years.
Choose a sunny or lightly shaded position with well-draining soil for your Negishi Pine. It’s not particular about soil conditions, but proper drainage is crucial. Give it regular water during its first year, then only water during dry periods once settled. You can pinch back roughly half the new spring candles to maintain its compact size and promote bushier growth. An annual spring feed with general fertiliser helps, though don’t overdo it. This pine rarely needs pruning – simply remove any dead or rubbing branches during late winter.
