Add Japanese charm to your garden with the Japanese White Pine ‘Tempelhof’. This dwarf conifer, a form of Japanese White Pine Pinus parviflora, is a real horticultural treasure that delivers plenty of character in a compact size. The ‘Tempelhof’ variety is well-known for its neat, globe-like growth pattern, which naturally creates an attractive rounded shape without needing much pruning. Its needles, grouped in clusters of five, show off a lovely blue-green colour that brings a cool, peaceful feel to any garden space. As it gets older, the tree develops a gently flattened crown, similar to trees you’d find in classic Japanese gardens or bonsai displays.
This slow-growing pine usually only reaches 1-2 metres tall over 10 years, which makes it perfect for smaller gardens, rockeries, or even big pots. In spring, tiny brown cones appear and add extra appeal to this already striking tree. The ‘Tempelhof’ variety, named after the well-known Berlin airport, adds a bit of gardening history to your outdoor space whilst providing year-round appeal and simple maintenance.
Japanese White Pine ‘Tempelhof’ is relatively easy to care for, making it suitable for both novice and experienced gardeners. It prefers full sun to partial shade and thrives in well-drained, slightly acidic soil. When planting, ensure good drainage, as this pine doesn’t tolerate waterlogged conditions. Water regularly during its first growing season to establish a deep root system, then reduce watering as it matures. This tree is drought-tolerant once established. Pruning isn’t usually necessary, but you can remove dead or damaged branches in late winter if needed. To maintain its compact shape, you can pinch back new growth in spring. ‘Tempelhof’ is generally pest and disease resistant, but keep an eye out for pine needle scale or spider mites. Protect from harsh winds, especially in winter. With proper care, this beautiful pine can be a long-lasting feature in your garden.
