The Monterey Pine Pinus radiata is a quick-growing evergreen that provides year-round appeal in gardens. Its vibrant green needles form clusters of three, producing a thick, handsome canopy that gives shelter to wildlife. This pine grows to substantial heights, making it perfect for screening or as a feature specimen tree.
When young, the tree shows a naturally attractive pyramid form, maturing into a wider crown over time. The bark is deeply grooved and dark grey, providing winter appeal. The glossy brown pine cones stay on the tree for several years, adding extra character to your garden.
Native to California’s central coast, this tough pine has gained popularity in gardens due to its rapid growth and versatility. It can reach up to a metre of growth annually in favourable conditions, ideal if you need to establish privacy or shelter fairly quickly.
Plant your Monterey Pine Pinus radiata in well-drained soil in full sun. While it tolerates most soil types, it particularly thrives in slightly acidic conditions. Water regularly in the first growing season to help establish a strong root system, but once established, it’s quite drought tolerant. No regular pruning is needed – simply remove any dead or crossing branches in late summer. This tree is fairly wind-resistant but may benefit from shelter in extremely exposed sites.

Seeds
We generally send seeds out via Royal Mail Second Class. It’s the safest and easiest way to deliver seeds.
Young Trees
Young trees (Less than 1.2m) will generally be sent via Evri.
Larger quantities of young trees will be sent via ParcelForce or pallet courier..
Huge Trees
Some of our huge trees are too tall to be sent via a courier. They are generally only available for collection from our nursery, local delivery or via occasionally pallet courier. This will be shown on the individual product page.
