Smooth-bark Mexican Pine Seeds

The smooth-bark Mexican pine – Pinus pseudostrobus is a spectacular evergreen that brings tropical elegance to British gardens. This graceful conifer produces incredibly long needles, reaching up to 30cm in length. These soft needles hang down in attractive bundles of five, creating a weeping effect. This pine offers year-round interest with several unique features. The smooth, reddish-brown bark of young trees feels almost like leather. As trees age, the bark becomes thicker and develops attractive plates. The pendulous needles move gracefully in the slightest breeze. Their blue-green colour provides a soft, tropical feel. The tree produces decorative cones that add extra interest.

British gardeners in milder areas will find this pine surprisingly adaptable. It prefers sheltered spots away from cold winds. The tree tolerates various soil types but needs good drainage. Once established, it handles dry periods well. This pine works brilliantly as a specimen tree where its weeping needles can be appreciated. It also suits exotic or Mediterranean-style gardens.
