The Monterey Pine Pinus radiata adds a slice of Californian coastline charm to gardens. This quick-growing evergreen features bright green needles grouped in threes, which creates attractive texture alongside the reddish-brown bark. The branches spread outwards during growth, developing a wide, open crown.
Young specimens grow at an impressive rate, gaining as much as a metre annually when conditions suit them. The needles remain vibrant and green throughout the year, making this tree excellent for screening purposes or creating windbreaks. During winter months, the thick foliage provides valuable shelter for garden birds.
This pine develops fascinating cones that begin green before turning brown with age, frequently remaining on the tree for years. The bark creates an attractive, plated appearance as it matures, providing visual appeal across all seasons.
Originally from California, it thrives in our conditions, particularly in coastal areas. It handles salt-laden winds and exposed sites with ease. The vivid green colouring and speedy growth make it a favourite choice for gardeners wanting quick impact in larger spaces.
Position your Monterey Pine in free-draining soil where it receives full sun. While hardy, it performs best in spots protected from the harshest winds. Give it plenty of water during its first growing season to encourage strong root development. Once established, it requires minimal care apart from pruning out any dead wood. The tree naturally resists most issues and thrives particularly well in coastal locations.

Seeds
We generally send seeds out via Royal Mail Second Class. It’s the safest and easiest way to deliver seeds.
Young Trees
Young trees (Less than 1.2m) will generally be sent via Evri.
Larger quantities of young trees will be sent via ParcelForce or pallet courier..
Huge Trees
Some of our huge trees are too tall to be sent via a courier. They are generally only available for collection from our nursery, local delivery or via occasionally pallet courier. This will be shown on the individual product page.
