Eastern White Pine Pinus strobus is a stunning conifer that comes from eastern North America. This impressive tree has been popular in British gardens ever since it arrived here in the 1600s.
This pine stands out with its soft, blue-green needles arranged in groups of five. The needles give the tree a light, feathery look that creates an elegant outline. Young trees have smooth, greenish-grey bark that becomes dark and deeply grooved with age.
During spring, the male cones release pollen whilst the female cones take two years to fully develop. These long, narrow cones bring added interest to winter gardens. As a quick-growing pine, it can reach remarkable heights, perfect for larger gardens.
The tree copes well with different soil conditions but does best in moist, well-draining ground. It grows happily in full sun or partial shade and handles urban pollution quite well. This makes it a flexible option for gardens across the country.
Eastern White Pine looks good all year round and creates important homes for wildlife. Its impressive stature and rich history make it an excellent choice for any garden with enough space.
