The ‘Gold Coin’ Scots Pine Pinus sylvestris stands out with its gorgeous golden needles, perfect for gardeners wanting to bring colour and year-round appeal to their gardens.
This variety has a steady growth habit, putting on roughly 15-20cm each year. It will eventually reach 3-5 metres tall with a lovely broad, pyramid-like shape that gives real structure to any garden. Its manageable size works well in smaller gardens or makes a fantastic feature tree in bigger spaces.
The golden foliage really sets this tree apart. Fresh spring growth appears in bright golden-yellow tones that create wonderful contrast with surrounding greenery. This vibrant colour stays strong all year, becoming richer and more intense through winter months for constant garden appeal. The needles have a twisted quality that catches sunlight beautifully, adding extra decorative value.
Don’t let the delicate golden colour fool you – ‘Gold Coin’ is surprisingly tough. It suits our climate well and grows happily in both full sun and partial shade, though the colour develops best with plenty of sunshine. While it likes well-drained soil, it adapts to different soil conditions including poor and sandy ground. It also copes well with urban pollution and coastal conditions, making it suitable for various garden situations.
Works brilliantly planted in the garden or as a bonsai subject.
