The Scots Pine Pinus sylvestris ‘Gold Coin’ stands out for its gorgeous golden needles, offering gardeners a fantastic way to bring year-round colour and warmth to any garden.

This variety has a slow to moderate growth habit, usually putting on around 15-20cm each year. Eventually reaching 3-5 metres tall, it develops a lovely broad, pyramid-like shape that brings real structure to the garden. Its neat, compact size works well in smaller to medium gardens or makes a superb feature tree in bigger spaces.

The real showstopper is the foliage. Fresh needles appear in a vibrant golden-yellow during spring, creating a lovely contrast with surrounding green plants. This bright colour stays strong all year, becoming a bit richer and more intense through winter, keeping the garden looking interesting in every season. The slightly twisted needles add extra decorative appeal and catch sunlight beautifully.

Don’t let the bright golden look fool you – ‘Gold Coin’ is tougher than it appears. It suits our climate perfectly and copes well in both full sun and partial shade, though full sun brings out the best colours. While it likes well-drained soil, it adapts to different soil types, including poor and sandy conditions. It also handles urban pollution and coastal spots quite well, making it suitable for lots of different garden situations.

Works brilliantly planted straight in the garden or grown as a bonsai.
