Pinus thunbergii is a species of pine native to coastal areas of Japan (Kyūshū, Shikoku and Honshū) but also South Korea. It is an evergreen tree that can reach up to 40 meters in height, but more commonly attains a height of 12-20 meters. Its bark is black and scaly, and the leaves (needles) are in fascicles (bundles) of two, a characteristic feature of the Pinus genus.
For its cultivation, it generally prefers full sun and well-drained soil. It can tolerate a variety of soil types, including sandy, loamy, and clay soils, as long as they are well-draining.
This tree is known for its rugged appearance, often being sculpted by the wind in its natural habitat. Its strong resistance to pollution and salt makes it an excellent choice for planting in challenging environments such as urban and coastal areas. The Japanese black pine is often used in the traditional niwaki style of Japanese pruning, which creates a mature, weathered look in the tree. The tree’s bark naturally becomes rough and textured with age, enhancing the appearance of a miniature, ancient tree. Additionally, the tree’s needles respond well to trimming and can be reduced in size, which is an important aspect in keeping the tree proportional in the bonsai form.
Pinus thunbergii is versatile in its uses; it’s not only a popular choice for the meticulous art of bonsai but also makes a resilient and attractive addition to outdoor garden landscapes.
