Yunnan Pine 20/40cm (P9)

Pinus yunnanensis

£13.55

A swiftly growing evergreen coniferous tree, capable of attaining a height of 30 meters (100 feet). In its youth, the bark displays a smooth texture and a grey-brown hue, but as it ages, it develops vertical fissures and a scaly appearance. This tree assumes a broadly conical canopy, with needles typically arranged in pairs, occasionally in groups of three, at the tips of its branches. These needles can reach lengths of up to 30 centimetres (12 inches) and drape gracefully from the tree, sporting a pale green hue.

Yunnan Pine Pinus yunnanensis is an impressive conifer that adds the character of Chinese mountain forests to British gardens. Originally from the varied landscapes of southwestern China, this evergreen stands out with its commanding presence and unique form. At maturity, the Yunnan Pine grows a straight, towering trunk reaching 20–30 metres in good growing conditions.

The tree’s crown is especially distinctive, beginning with a pyramid shape when young before developing into a wide, flat-topped or umbrella-shaped canopy as it ages, making a bold statement in any garden. The foliage features long, narrow needles, usually 15-20 cm long, grouped in threes. These needles form a thick, rich canopy of deep green that offers year-round appeal and garden structure. The bark on Pinus yunnanensis is thick with deep grooves, varying from dark grey to rich reddish-brown tones, which adds textural interest to the tree’s character. During spring, small reddish male cones appear alongside larger female cones, which take two years to develop into woody, oval-shaped forms.

The pine’s ability to grow in different soil conditions and its drought tolerance when settled make it perfect for larger gardens, parks, or tree collections, where it works brilliantly as a feature tree or within mixed conifer plantings.

Pinus yunnanensis is relatively low-maintenance once established. It prefers full sun exposure and thrives in well-drained soils, though it can adapt to a variety of soil types, including poor and rocky soils. Young trees benefit from regular watering during their first few growing seasons, but mature trees are quite drought-tolerant. Pruning is generally not necessary unless you’re removing dead or damaged branches. If shaping is desired, do so in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. This pine is generally resistant to pests and diseases, but keep an eye out for common pine issues such as needle blight or bark beetles. Fertilisation is usually not required unless the soil is particularly poor. When planting, consider the tree’s eventual size and provide ample space for growth.
Protect young trees from strong winds until they’re well-established. With proper care, Yunnan Pines can be a long-lived, impressive feature in your garden.

Pinus yunnanensis suits the British climate well, coping with both cold winters and mild summers. Hardy throughout most of Britain even during harsh winters (-15C to -10C).
Though Yunnan Pines are tough, young trees might need protection from severe frost during their first few winters. Mulch around the tree base and wrap the trunk with tree wrap or hessian if frost threatens.
