The national flower of Japan, the cherry blossom – or Sakura, represents a time of renewal and optimism. The pops of pink mark the ending of winter and signify the beginning of spring. Due to their quick blooming season, cherry blossoms also symbolize the transience of life, a major theme in Buddhism.

Grow your own Japanese Cherry Blossom Tree – Sakura. Although the Cherry Blossom is a collection of many Prunus species, these seeds are from the famous Prunus serrulata tree.
The Japanese Cherry, Prunus serrulata, stands as a symbol of beauty and transient nature with its breathtaking blooms. Native to East Asia, this deciduous tree graces UK gardens with its spectacular display of pink to white flowers each spring.
Thriving in well-drained, fertile soil, it prefers a position bathed in sunlight. The Japanese Cherry’s elegance is not only a feast for the eyes but also supports biodiversity, offering nectar to pollinators. Its growth habit, a picturesque rounded canopy, and glossy, dark bark, contribute to its popularity as a focal point in landscapes.
The tree’s appeal extends beyond its flowering period, as it provides a striking silhouette against the winter sky. Adaptable and relatively easy to care for, Prunus serrulata is cherished for adding a touch of serenity and spectacular beauty to any setting.
Natural Germination: ‘Grandiflora’ seeds benefit from cold stratification to mimic winter conditions, enhancing germination rates. Planting the seeds in fall allows them to naturally stratify during the winter months.
Artificial Stratification: To germinate seeds outside of their natural cycle, mix the seeds with slightly moist sand and store them in the refrigerator at 2-5°C for about 90-120 days before planting. This method simulates the natural cold period the seeds require to break dormancy.
