Coast Redwood ‘Adpressa’ – Sequoia sempervirens ‘Adpressa’ is a distinctive dwarf variety of the famous coast redwood, ideal for gardens of all sizes. This compact cultivar brings the appeal of its enormous relatives into a much more manageable form. ‘Adpressa’ stands out with its dense, rounded habit and delicate, feathery leaves that add wonderful texture to any planting scheme.

This slow-growing variety differs greatly from its massive relatives, usually reaching just 2-3 metres tall after 10 years, with a similar width. Its modest size suits smaller gardens, rockeries, or even generous containers. The leaves display attractive blue-green tones that develop bronze hints during winter months, providing colour throughout the year.

The dense, congested branching pattern of ‘Adpressa’ creates an almost bonsai-style look. Its short, tightly packed needles produce a soft, pleasant texture that works well alongside other garden plants. The naturally slow growth means minimal pruning is needed to keep its shape, making it ideal for gardeners who prefer low-maintenance plants.

‘Adpressa’ originated as a chance seedling found in California and has become highly sought after by conifer collectors. Its uncommon presence in gardens makes it a special choice for any plant enthusiast.

Coast Redwood ‘Adpressa’ brings something truly special to your garden space. Its neat form and distinctive texture work perfectly as a centrepiece or specimen plant. Whether planted in a conifer collection, incorporated into a rock garden, or used as a standalone feature, this dwarf redwood will certainly catch the eye and interest of garden visitors.

Coast Redwood ‘Adpressa’ is relatively easy to care for in UK gardens. Plant it in full sun to partial shade in well-drained, slightly acidic soil. It prefers a sheltered position away from strong winds. Water regularly during its first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, it’s fairly drought-tolerant but benefits from deep watering during prolonged dry spells. Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring. Pruning is generally not necessary due to its naturally compact form, but you can lightly trim in late winter or early spring if needed. Watch out for spider mites in dry conditions. Protect young plants from severe frost in their first few winters. With proper care, your ‘Adpressa’ will thrive and provide year-round interest in your garden.

If left unattended, it will form a broadly conical, rather open tree that will be 4 to 6 feet (1.5 โ€“ 2m) tall after 10 years. However, if subjected to regular shearing and occasional, ‘Adpressa’ will be a fairly tight, bright white ball.

Supplied in a 3 litre pot.
