The Giant Sequoia Sequoiadendron giganteum, also called the giant redwood, appears on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List as “Endangered”. This status indicates the species is at very high risk of becoming extinct in the wild.

Historical logging and continuing habitat destruction are the main reasons behind the giant sequoia’s endangered status. Even with conservation work ongoing, these ancient trees still face dangers from climate change, disease, and wildfires. Safeguarding their natural environments and growing your own specimens are vital actions to help Sequoiadendron giganteum survive for future generations.

Growing rapidly to heights well above 30m (100ft), these massive conifers reach their impressive size quite quickly. The Wellingtonia shows a distinctive narrow cone shape with a pointed crown, plus beautiful reddish brown bark that catches the evening light beautifully.

Giant Sequoia Sequoiadendron giganteum – An enormous and long-living evergreen that can grow beyond 100m in height. This endangered species needs our help for conservation. You can support these ancient giants by growing one yourself. They once spread across Europe and Asia, but now their final natural home is California’s West coast, where wildfire and climate change pose serious threats.

These trees are becoming more popular here and you’ll spot them throughout most of the country in both private and public locations. Scotland has the tallest one – a 150-year-old tree standing at over 55m. They regularly appear in lists of the country’s largest, tallest, oldest and most impressive trees.

Giant Sequoia Sequoiadendron giganteum holds many remarkable records:

1. Biggest Trees: Giant sequoias rank among Earth’s largest living things, with some reaching incredible heights above 300 feet (91 metres).
2. Ancient Trees: Though not quite as old as bristlecone pines, giant sequoias still count among the planet’s most ancient trees, with some thought to be over 3,000 years old.
3. Greatest Volume: For pure volume, the giant sequoia stands alone. Its huge trunk and thick branches create remarkable girth and massive overall size.
4. Biggest Tree by Volume: The “General Sherman” tree in California’s Sequoia National Park claims the title of largest tree by volume, measuring roughly 52,500 cubic feet (1,487 cubic metres).
5. Biggest Tree by Base: The “General Grant” tree in Kings Canyon National Park, California, known as the “Nation’s Christmas Tree”, ranks as the second-largest by volume but has the biggest base circumference at about 107 feet (32.6 metres).
6. Biggest Grove: The Giant Forest in Sequoia National Park holds a major collection of giant sequoias and stands as one of the most famous and extensive groves of these magnificent trees.

These records make Sequoiadendron giganteum a truly remarkable species, drawing nature lovers and conservation work to protect these incredible giants for future generations.
