Giant Redwood ‘Glaucum’ *Sequoiadendron giganteum* ‘Glaucum’ is a stunning evergreen conifer that adds ancient majesty to gardens. This particular variety stands out for its beautiful blue-green needles, which create an almost silvery effect when caught in the light. The ‘Glaucum’ form grows more slowly and stays more compact than the standard giant redwood, which makes it better suited to larger domestic gardens rather than requiring the vast space of its wild relatives.
While more manageable than the species, ‘Glaucum’ still develops into a remarkable tree, creating a wide, cone-shaped silhouette that provides structure and interest throughout the year. The blue-green foliage grows in clusters along the branches, producing a delicate, feathery appearance that works well alongside other garden plants.
With age, the Giant Redwood ‘Glaucum’ forms characteristic thick, fibrous bark that’s naturally fire-resistant – just like its Californian ancestors that can survive for millennia. Your garden tree won’t match those forest titans, but it will still become a considerable specimen over time, possibly reaching 20-30 metres tall.
This tree works brilliantly for gardeners wanting to establish a strong feature or bring lasting presence to their space. It’s particularly good for wildlife-friendly gardens, offering protection for birds and smaller creatures. The Giant Redwood ‘Glaucum’ connects us to Earth’s prehistoric era, adding timeless character and awe to any garden with sufficient room.
The Giant Redwood ‘Glaucum’ is relatively easy to care for, given the right conditions. Plant it in a spot that receives full sun to partial shade, with shelter from strong winds. It prefers moist, well-drained soil but can tolerate a range of soil types. Water regularly during its first few growing seasons to establish a deep root system. Once established, it’s quite drought-tolerant but appreciates occasional deep watering during dry spells. Pruning isn’t necessary unless you’re removing dead or damaged branches. Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth. This tree is generally resistant to pests and diseases, making it a low-maintenance option for those with the space to grow it.
