Giant Redwood ‘Glaucum’ – *Sequoiadendron giganteum* ‘Glaucum’ is a spectacular evergreen conifer that adds ancient majesty to gardens. This particular cultivar stands out with its beautiful blue-green needles that shimmer with a silvery sheen, particularly when caught by the sun. The ‘Glaucum’ form grows more slowly and stays more compact than the standard giant redwood, which makes it better suited to larger residential gardens.
While still more manageable than the species, ‘Glaucum’ develops into a magnificent tree with a wide, pyramid-like form that provides structure and all-season appeal. Its blue-green foliage grows in delicate sprays across the branches, giving a lovely feathery appearance that looks wonderful alongside other garden plants.
Over time, Giant Redwood ‘Glaucum’ forms the characteristic thick, fibrous bark that resists fire – just like its wild California relatives that can survive for millennia. Your garden tree won’t match those forest champions for size, but it will become a considerable specimen over the decades, possibly growing to 20-30 metres tall.
This tree works brilliantly as a centrepiece or for adding long-term character to larger gardens. It’s also valuable for wildlife, offering roosting spots for birds and shelter for smaller creatures. Giant Redwood ‘Glaucum’ connects us to Earth’s distant history, bringing a sense of permanence and awe to any garden with sufficient space.
The Giant Redwood ‘Glaucum’ is relatively easy to care for, given the right conditions. Plant it in a spot that receives full sun to partial shade, with shelter from strong winds. It prefers moist, well-drained soil but can tolerate a range of soil types. Water regularly during its first few growing seasons to establish a deep root system. Once established, it’s quite drought-tolerant but appreciates occasional deep watering during dry spells. Pruning isn’t necessary unless you’re removing dead or damaged branches. Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth. This tree is generally resistant to pests and diseases, making it a low-maintenance option for those with the space to grow it.
