Giant Redwood ‘Greenpeace’ *Sequoiadendron giganteum* is an outstanding Dutch-bred variety that adds lasting colour to gardens throughout the year. While most conifers develop bronzed tones during winter months, this cultivar keeps its brilliant emerald-green needles in all seasons, providing a reliable source of fresh colour in your garden.
This attractive tree forms a wide, pyramidal outline that gives good impact without reaching the massive proportions of the standard species. Growing at about half the speed of regular Giant Redwoods, it achieves roughly 4.5 metres tall and 3 metres across after ten years, which suits larger gardens and planned spaces well.
The cultivar stands out for its steady yearly growth of about 45cm, letting gardeners watch it develop into an impressive specimen tree. The thick, grass-green foliage forms a solid, structural feature that looks excellent on its own or grouped with other conifers.
The neat, cone-shaped growth happens naturally without any pruning needed, while the unchanging green colour gives a dependable setting for surrounding garden plants. Its bright look during winter months proves particularly useful when most other plants have died back.
Plant your Giant Redwood ‘Greenpeace’ in well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. Whilst adaptable to most soil types, it prefers slightly acidic to neutral conditions. Water regularly when young, particularly during dry spells, though established trees become quite drought tolerant. No regular pruning is needed as it naturally forms an attractive shape. A yearly feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring will keep it healthy. The tree is fully hardy but appreciates some shelter from strong winds while young.
