Swamp Cypress ‘Pendula’ – Taxodium distichum ‘Pendula’ is a graceful weeping form of the classic swamp cypress, offering a distinctive architectural presence with its cascading branches and soft, feathery foliage. This deciduous conifer brings year-round interest to gardens, with bright green needle-like leaves in spring and summer that transform into rich russet and bronze tones before falling in autumn. The weeping habit creates a dramatic focal point, with branches that arch and drape elegantly, making it an excellent specimen tree for larger gardens or positioned beside water features.

Native to the wetlands of North America, this cultivar retains the species’ remarkable adaptability whilst adding a unique weeping form. The tree develops attractive fibrous, reddish-brown bark that becomes deeply furrowed with age, adding textural interest throughout the year. Unlike most conifers, Taxodium distichum ‘Pendula’ is deciduous, shedding its foliage in winter to reveal an intricate framework of pendulous branches. In its natural habitat, the species develops distinctive ‘knees’ or pneumatophores when grown in waterlogged conditions, though these are less common in typical garden settings.

This weeping swamp cypress thrives in moist to wet soils and is particularly well-suited to planting near ponds, streams, or in boggy areas where many other trees would struggle. However, it also tolerates drier conditions once established, making it more versatile than its common name suggests. The soft foliage provides a wonderful contrast to broader-leaved plants and the weeping form adds movement and grace to any planting scheme.

The current size of 20/40cm represents a young plant that will develop into a substantial tree over time. This smaller size allows gardeners to establish the tree in their chosen location whilst it’s still manageable, watching it develop its characteristic weeping habit as it matures. Plant in full sun to partial shade in moisture-retentive soil, though this cypress tolerates a wide range of soil types from permanently wet to moderately dry once established. It performs exceptionally well in heavy clay soils and waterside locations. Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball and incorporate organic matter to improve soil structure.

Water regularly during the first two growing seasons to establish a deep root system, particularly important during dry spells. Once established, trees in moisture-retentive soils require little additional watering, though those in drier positions benefit from irrigation during prolonged drought.

Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring to encourage healthy growth. A mulch of well-rotted compost or bark chippings around the base helps retain moisture and suppress weeds, but keep mulch away from the trunk to prevent rot.

Pruning is rarely necessary beyond removing any dead, damaged, or crossing branches in late winter or early spring. The natural weeping form should be allowed to develop without intervention. Avoid heavy pruning as this can spoil the tree’s graceful habit.

This cypress is fully hardy and requires no winter protection. The deciduous nature means it naturally adapts to cold temperatures by shedding its foliage. It tolerates exposed positions and is resistant to most pests and diseases, making it a low-maintenance choice for gardens.
