Swamp Cypress Taxodium distichum is a remarkable tree that breaks all the rules about what conifers should look like. Originally from the southeastern United States, this deciduous conifer has settled into British conditions beautifully, adding an unusual touch to our gardens.

What makes Swamp Cypress special is its soft, feathery foliage in light green that transforms to gorgeous russet-brown shades each autumn before dropping. This autumn show creates a wonderful display, filling gardens with rich, warm colours. The bark is quite attractive as well, showing reddish-brown tones that peel away in strips for winter appeal.

The most curious aspect of Swamp Cypress is how it can develop “knees” – distinctive woody growths that emerge from the root system, especially in boggy spots. Nobody’s quite sure what these do exactly, but they create fascinating sculptural features, particularly around ponds and water gardens.

Back home, Swamp Cypress trees can reach towering heights of 30-40 metres. Here in Britain, they usually grow to a more manageable 15-20 metres, developing a neat pyramid shape that spreads out as it matures. The elegant, weeping branches form a gentle, flowing outline that looks particularly lovely reflected in water.

Don’t let the name fool you – Swamp Cypress is quite flexible about where it grows. It loves wet, even boggy soil, but once it’s settled in, it can cope with drier spots too. This makes it perfect for all sorts of garden settings, whether you’re planting by a pond or in regular garden borders.

For garden planning, Swamp Cypress works brilliantly as a standalone feature tree, especially near water. Its delicate texture pairs wonderfully with plants that have bigger leaves, and its seasonal changes keep things interesting all year round. If you’ve got the space, a small group of these trees creates a truly atmospheric scene, particularly in autumn.

Swamp Cypress isn’t just pretty – it’s practical too. In wet areas, it helps hold the soil together and prevents erosion. Its ability to handle waterlogged ground makes it brilliant for rain gardens or spots that flood regularly.

Approx 40/60cm depending of the time of year. Supplied in a 9cm pot.
