Swamp Cypress Taxodium distichum, also called Bald Cypress, is a remarkable tree that breaks the mould of what we expect from conifers. Originally from the southeastern United States, this deciduous conifer has settled well into British conditions and adds an exotic touch to gardens.
What makes Swamp Cypress special is its delicate, pale green needles that shift to gorgeous russet-brown shades in autumn before dropping. This autumn show creates a wonderful display, filling gardens with rich, warm colours. The bark is quite attractive as well, showing reddish-brown tones that peel away in strips for added winter appeal.
Perhaps the most curious aspect of Swamp Cypress is how it can develop “knees” – these are woody growths that emerge from the root system, especially in damp spots. Though experts still debate why they form, these knees create an unusual sculptural feature, particularly striking around ponds and water gardens.
Back home, Swamp Cypress trees can soar to 30-40 metres tall. Here in Britain, they usually stay more manageable at 15-20 metres, growing in a pyramid shape that spreads out as it matures. The elegant, drooping branches form a soft, flowing outline that looks particularly lovely when mirrored in water.
Don’t let the name fool you – Swamp Cypress is quite flexible about growing conditions. Though it loves wet or even boggy soil, it can cope with drier spots once it gets going. This adaptability makes it work well in various garden settings, from waterside spots to regular flower beds.
For garden planning, Swamp Cypress works brilliantly as a standout tree, especially near water features. Its fine foliage looks great alongside plants with bigger leaves, and its seasonal changes keep gardens interesting all year round. In bigger spaces, planting several together creates a wonderfully atmospheric grove, particularly stunning in autumn.
Apart from looking good, Swamp Cypress brings practical benefits too. In wet areas, it helps hold soil together and prevents erosion. Its ability to handle waterlogged ground makes it handy for rain gardens or spots that flood occasionally.
Approx 60/80cm depending of the time of year. Supplied in a 9cm pot.
