White Cedar *Thuja occidentalis* has been cultivated in British gardens for over 400 years, with the bright ‘Sunkist’ cultivar gaining popularity after its launch in the 1960s.
This lovely conifer adds cheerful colour to any garden with its vibrant golden-yellow needles that keep their brilliance all year round. While many yellow conifers fade to a dull shade during summer months, ‘Sunkist’ retains its rich golden tones superbly, making it an excellent focal point wherever you plant it.
The delicate, scale-like foliage grows in flat, fan-shaped clusters that build up the plant in appealing layers. During winter months, the golden foliage develops lovely orange hints, bringing welcome warmth to cold-season gardens. The result is bright and uplifting without being overwhelming.
‘Sunkist’ naturally develops a tidy, upright columnar form that requires minimal pruning to keep looking smart. It’s a moderate grower, putting on about 15-20cm each year, so it’s simple to keep at whatever size suits your space.
This conifer is ideal for British gardens. It’s fully hardy, coping well with winter frosts and summer dry spells once it’s settled in. It’s not particular about soil type provided drainage is reasonable, and it thrives in both sunny spots and areas with some shade.
‘Sunkist’ is versatile in the garden. It makes an excellent standalone feature, fits perfectly into mixed plantings, and creates wonderful golden screening. It’s especially useful for adding height and structure without spreading widely, making it perfect for compact gardens.
