Eastern Hemlock ‘Jeddeloh’ Tsuga canadensis is a charming dwarf conifer that adds character and structure to gardens. This slow-growing variety is loved for its unusual nest-shaped form, making it a natural feature in any garden design.
‘Jeddeloh’ reaches roughly 1–1.5 metres in height and width after 10 years, keeping a neat, rounded shape that looks like a bird’s nest. The delicate, dark green needles grow in flat clusters, creating a soft, feathery appearance that works well alongside other plants. Fresh spring growth appears in a paler green shade, bringing extra colour to the plant’s look.
While regular forest hemlocks grow very tall, this compact form works brilliantly in smaller gardens, rockeries, and pots. Its manageable size and steady growth make it perfect for creating miniature gardens or Japanese-inspired spaces.
‘Jeddeloh’ does best in partial shade though it can handle full sun in cooler areas, so it fits into many different garden spots. Being evergreen means it looks good all year round, with its special shape adding form and texture through winter months. As the plant gets older, the middle may dip slightly, making the nest shape even more obvious and creating interesting shadows.
You can use Eastern Hemlock ‘Jeddeloh’ Tsuga canadensis on its own in a rock garden, with other conifers, or mixed with perennials. It gives gardeners a low-maintenance, eye-catching plant that brings woodland appeal to any size garden.
