The Wollemi Pine Tree Wollemia nobilis is a truly remarkable and ancient plant, often referred to as a “living fossil.” This captivating tree is native to a remote, inaccessible gorge in the Wollemi National Park, west of Sydney, Australia, where it was discovered in 1994 after being thought extinct for millions of years.

The Wollemi Pine is a slow-growing, evergreen conifer that can reach impressive heights of over 40 metres in its natural habitat. However, the specimen you are purchasing is a young, manageable 20-40cm in height, making it an ideal choice for UK gardens. Its unique, layered, fern-like foliage is a stunning shade of bright green, and the trunk develops a distinctive, spongy, chocolate-brown bark as the tree matures.

These remarkable trees are adaptable to a range of soil types and climates, thriving in both full sun and partial shade. They are also remarkably hardy, tolerating temperatures as low as -10°C, making them a suitable choice for many UK gardens.

To care for your Wollemi Pine, ensure it is planted in well-draining, acidic soil and water regularly, especially during dry spells. Mulch the base of the tree to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune lightly in early spring to maintain its natural, pyramidal shape. With the right care and attention, your Wollemi Pine will grow into a majestic, conversation-starting specimen in your garden.
