The Wollemi Pine – Wollemia nobilis is one of the world’s rarest and most ancient conifers, often described as a living fossil. Discovered in 1994 in a remote canyon in the Blue Mountains of Australia, this prehistoric tree had been thought extinct for millions of years. Now available to gardeners, this remarkable conifer brings a piece of botanical history to your garden, with its distinctive bubbly bark and unusual branching habit that sets it apart from any other tree.

This specimen measures 100/120cm in height and is supplied in a 5-litre pot, making it an ideal size for planting out or growing in a large container. The Wollemi Pine produces bright lime-green new growth in spring that matures to a darker green, creating a striking two-tone effect throughout the growing season. Its foliage consists of soft, flat needles arranged in four neat rows along the branches, giving it an attractive fern-like appearance. The bark develops a distinctive chocolate-brown colour with a bubbly, knobbly texture that becomes more pronounced as the tree matures.

Wollemia nobilis is surprisingly adaptable and can thrive in gardens across most regions when given appropriate care. While it originates from a sheltered canyon environment, it has proven hardier than initially expected, tolerating temperatures down to around -10°C once established. Young plants benefit from some protection during their first few winters, particularly from cold winds and heavy frosts. The tree performs best in a sheltered position with dappled shade or morning sun, though it can tolerate more sun in cooler, northern regions.

This conifer makes an exceptional specimen tree for gardens with space to accommodate its eventual size, or it can be grown successfully in a large container for many years. Its unique appearance and fascinating history make it a genuine conversation piece, whilst its relatively compact growth habit compared to many conifers makes it suitable for medium-sized gardens. The Wollemi Pine works beautifully as a focal point, planted where its distinctive bark and foliage can be appreciated year-round.

Care Guide

Plant your Wollemi Pine in moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. It prefers a slightly acidic to neutral pH but will tolerate a range of soil types provided drainage is good. Choose a sheltered spot protected from strong winds and harsh winter weather, particularly whilst the tree is young and establishing.

Water regularly during the first two growing seasons to help establish a strong root system. Once established, the tree is reasonably drought-tolerant but performs best with consistent moisture during dry spells. Mulch around the base with organic matter to retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping the mulch away from the trunk.

Feed in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser suitable for conifers or acid-loving plants. Avoid high-nitrogen feeds which can encourage soft growth susceptible to frost damage.

Pruning is rarely necessary beyond removing any damaged or crossing branches. The tree naturally develops an attractive pyramidal shape with multiple trunks. In colder regions, consider wrapping young plants with horticultural fleece during severe winter weather for the first few years.

Container-grown specimens need regular watering and feeding throughout the growing season. Move pots to a sheltered location during winter and ensure adequate drainage to prevent waterlogging.
