The Wollemi Pine – Wollemia nobilis is one of the world’s most extraordinary botanical discoveries, a living fossil thought to have been extinct for millions of years until its rediscovery in 1994 in a remote Australian canyon. This prehistoric conifer brings an ancient lineage to gardens, with its distinctive bubbly bark texture and unusual whorled foliage creating an architectural presence that captures the imagination. The plant you receive measures 80/100cm in height, supplied in a 5-litre pot, representing a rare opportunity to grow this remarkable species.

This evergreen conifer displays unique characteristics that set it apart from any other tree. The bark develops a distinctive dark brown texture resembling bubbling chocolate, whilst the foliage emerges in bright lime-green flushes before maturing to deep green. The leaves are arranged in four distinct rows along the stems, creating a fern-like appearance that adds textural interest throughout the year. New growth appears bronze-tinted in spring, providing seasonal colour variation that enhances its ornamental value.

Wollemia nobilis adapts surprisingly well to cultivation despite its rarity, tolerating a range of growing conditions once established. The species thrives in sheltered positions where it can develop its characteristic pyramidal form without wind damage. Young specimens benefit from protection during their establishment phase, though mature plants demonstrate reasonable hardiness. This conifer makes an exceptional specimen tree for collectors and those seeking something genuinely different, with its prehistoric heritage adding a conversation-starting element to any planting scheme.

The growth habit remains relatively compact during the early years, making this species suitable for larger gardens where it can be appreciated as a focal point. The architectural form works particularly well in contemporary garden designs, whilst the unusual texture and form complement more traditional plantings. Container cultivation is possible for several years, allowing gardeners with limited space to enjoy this botanical treasure before planting out.

Care Guide

Position your Wollemi Pine in a sheltered spot with protection from harsh winds and late frosts, particularly whilst establishing. The species tolerates both full sun and partial shade, though some protection from intense midday sun during summer helps prevent foliage scorch. Choose a location with good air circulation to minimise fungal issues whilst avoiding exposed positions.

Soil preparation is important for long-term success. Wollemia nobilis prefers well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil enriched with organic matter. Heavy clay soils require improvement with grit and compost to ensure adequate drainage, as waterlogged conditions can prove fatal. Raised beds or mounded planting sites work well in areas with drainage challenges.

Water regularly during the first two growing seasons to establish a strong root system, maintaining consistent moisture without waterlogging. Once established, the species tolerates short dry periods, though performs best with regular watering during extended dry spells. Mulch around the base with organic matter to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, keeping the mulch away from direct contact with the trunk.

Feed in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants, applying according to manufacturer’s instructions. Avoid high-nitrogen feeds that promote soft growth susceptible to frost damage. Additional feeding is rarely necessary in fertile soils.

Pruning is generally unnecessary beyond removing any dead or damaged growth in late spring. The natural form develops best without intervention, creating the characteristic pyramidal shape over time. Avoid cutting the main leader, as this can spoil the tree’s symmetry.

Winter protection benefits young plants, particularly during their first few years. Fleece wrapping or a windbreak shields tender growth from frost and cold winds. Container-grown specimens should be moved to sheltered positions during severe weather.
