Dwarf Birch – Betula nana is a small deciduous shrub native to arctic and subarctic areas, where it flourishes in cold, challenging conditions.

This compact woody shrub grows to about 30 to 60 centimetres tall. Its small size helps it cope with nutrient-poor soils and freezing temperatures. The leaves are oval with serrated edges, starting bright green before turning yellow or reddish in autumn, creating lovely seasonal colour. Small, subtle catkin flowers appear in spring.

This tough plant grows naturally in tundra, alpine, and subarctic zones, often forming dense, low carpets. It handles cold winds and poor soils brilliantly. Betula nana plays an important role in preventing soil erosion in tough environments whilst offering shelter and food for wildlife.

Beyond its environmental value, Dwarf Birch has traditional uses amongst indigenous communities. Its twigs and bark have been crafted into tools and containers for generations.

Betula nana needs well-drained soil with slightly acidic to neutral pH. Good drainage prevents waterlogging problems.

Choose a spot with partial to full sun, as this shrub needs sunlight for proper growth.

Before planting, improve the soil with organic matter such as compost or peat moss to boost structure and fertility.

Make sure the soil is fairly clear of competing weeds and roots for this slow-growing plant.

  • During the first growing season, water the shrub regularly to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
  • Once established, Betula nana is relatively drought-tolerant, but water during prolonged dry spells.
  • Prune Betula nana sparingly, usually in late winter or early spring, to remove dead or damaged branches.
  • Avoid heavy pruning, as this shrub has a natural, low-growing habit.
  • Betula nana typically doesn’t require heavy fertilization. Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring if the soil lacks nutrients.

Very hardy throughout Britain when established. Tolerates temperatures down to -20C
