The Cedrus libani ‘Blue Fountain’ is a stunning and majestic conifer that adds a touch of elegance to any garden. This cultivar of the iconic Cedar of Lebanon tree is renowned for its striking blue-green foliage and graceful, cascading habit.
As the name suggests, the ‘Blue Fountain’ variety boasts a captivating blue-grey hue to its needles, which creates a serene and calming presence in the landscape. The branches have a weeping, fountain-like form, gently draping downwards and creating a beautiful, cascading silhouette.
This versatile tree is well-suited to a range of garden settings, from formal landscapes to more naturalistic plantings. Its compact, pyramidal growth habit makes it an excellent choice for smaller gardens, where it can be used as a focal point or planted in groups to create a stunning visual impact.
Caring for the ‘Blue Fountain’ Cedar in the British climate is relatively straightforward. It prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil and thrives in full sun to partial shade. Regular watering during the first few years after planting will help establish a strong root system, and an occasional application of a balanced, slow-release fertiliser can promote healthy growth.
Pruning is generally not required, as the tree’s natural form is part of its charm. However, you may wish to remove any damaged or crossing branches to maintain its elegant appearance.
One of the standout features of the ‘Blue Fountain’ Cedar is its exceptional hardiness. It is well-suited to the British climate, able to withstand cold winters and exposure to wind without losing its vibrant colouration or structural integrity.
