The Deodar Cedar *Cedrus deodara* is a stunning evergreen conifer that adds Himalayan elegance to British gardens. This remarkable tree is famous for its elegant, weeping branches and delicate, blue-green needles that form a soft, feathery appearance. Younger specimens display a classic pyramid form, gradually developing a more spreading, flat-crowned habit as they mature. The Deodar Cedar achieves impressive dimensions, typically growing 20–30 metres tall in garden settings, making it an outstanding feature tree for spacious gardens or parkland. Its deeply furrowed, dark grey bark provides attractive winter appeal.

During autumn, male specimens develop small catkins, whilst female trees produce distinctive, upright barrel-shaped cones. These substantial cones remain on the tree for several years, contributing to its decorative appeal. The Deodar Cedar offers more than just beauty; it carries deep cultural significance and history. Within its natural habitat, it holds sacred status and has served traditional medicine and building purposes for many generations. Since arriving in British gardens during the 1830s, it has remained highly sought-after for its refined appearance and persistent evergreen foliage that delivers constant structure and visual appeal throughout the seasons.

The Deodar Cedar is relatively low-maintenance once established, making it suitable for gardeners of various experience levels. It thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. This tree prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil but is adaptable to various soil types as long as they’re not waterlogged. Young trees benefit from regular watering, especially during dry spells, but once established, they’re quite drought-tolerant. Pruning isn’t usually necessary as the tree naturally develops an attractive shape. However, you can remove any dead or damaged branches in late winter if needed. The Deodar Cedar is generally resistant to pests and diseases, adding to its low-maintenance appeal. It’s important to choose the planting site carefully, considering the tree’s eventual size and spread. Protect young trees from strong winds until they’re well-established. With proper care, this magnificent tree can live for several hundred years, becoming a long-lasting feature in your landscape.
