Cedar of Lebanon Cedrus libani is a spectacular coniferous tree steeped in history and known for its impressive appearance. Originally from the mountainous regions of the Eastern Mediterranean, this evergreen has been celebrated for thousands of years, appearing in historical writings and valued for its quality timber. When fully grown, it develops a characteristic broad, flat crown with spreading horizontal branches that create a unique outline commanding respect in any garden. The short, dark green needles grow in tight clusters along the branches, offering continuous visual appeal and texture throughout the year.
Younger specimens display a classic pyramid shape, slowly transforming into the famous flat-topped silhouette over time. The bark appears dark grey with deep furrows, contributing to the tree’s distinguished character. During autumn, impressive upright cones emerge on the upper branches, standing like sentinels. These cones require nearly two years to fully develop before breaking apart naturally on the tree to scatter their winged seeds.
Cedrus libani is famous for its remarkable lifespan, with certain trees surviving beyond a thousand years. Growth occurs at a steady, measured pace, ultimately achieving heights of 25-40 metres when cultivated, though wild specimens can tower even higher. This noble tree demands adequate space to fulfil its potential and suits large gardens, parks, or estates where it can serve as a centrepiece for future generations.
The Cedar of Lebanon carries immense cultural and historical importance. Ancient civilisations prized its robust, aromatic timber for construction and shipbuilding. Religious scriptures frequently reference this tree, and it once symbolised strength and endurance across the Middle East.
Within garden environments, Cedrus libani provides powerful architectural impact. Its persistent evergreen foliage delivers structure and winter appeal, whilst its expansive canopy creates pleasant summer shade. Wildlife benefits significantly, with birds building nests amongst the thick branches and small creatures sheltering under the wide-spreading lower limbs.
Plant your Cedar of Lebanon in a sunny, sheltered position with well-drained soil. It prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH but can tolerate alkaline soils. Ensure the planting site has ample space for the tree’s eventual size. Water regularly during the first few growing seasons to establish a deep root system. Once established, it’s drought-tolerant. Pruning is generally unnecessary unless you need to remove dead or damaged branches. Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring. While generally hardy, protect young trees from severe frost and strong winds.
