The Cedar of Lebanon Cedrus libani is a magnificent tree steeped in ancient heritage. This slow-growing conifer can reach impressive heights of 35 metres or more given time and sufficient space. The tree develops distinctive horizontal branching that creates the characteristic flat-topped, layered appearance that mature specimens are famous for. Dense clusters of short, dark green needles cover the branches, giving the tree an attractive texture throughout the year.
Young Cedar of Lebanon trees have a pyramidal form, but they gradually develop their famous flat-topped crown as they age – a feature that has made them popular in large gardens and parkland settings. During autumn, impressive upright cones appear on the upper branches. These cones take several years to fully develop before breaking apart on the tree to disperse their seeds.
Beyond its striking appearance, this tree is notably hardy. Well-established trees show excellent resistance to drought and strong winds. It provides valuable habitat for wildlife, giving shelter to various birds and small mammals. Although the timber is highly valued for its durability and pleasant scent, these trees are now grown mainly for their ornamental qualities rather than wood production.
